What transforms a group of employees into a truly high-achieving team? Beyond skills and strategy, it often hinges on the consistent practice of specific, powerful behaviors. We call these the six essential ‘watch words’: urgency, foresight, ownership, initiative, follow-through, and accuracy.

These aren’t just abstract ideals; they are the active ingredients driving productivity, embedding accountability, and enabling the kind of collaboration that delivers real results. This article breaks down why these particular watchwords are so critical and explores practical ways to cultivate them within individuals and teams for sustained success.

1. Urgency: Acting with Purpose and Speed

Urgency in the workplace goes beyond simply working faster; it’s about recognizing what needs to be prioritized and taking action without unnecessary delay. Employees who demonstrate a sense of urgency understand the importance of time in achieving business goals. They act swiftly to seek opportunities, respond to client/customer needs, and keep projects moving forward.

Organizations that encourage urgency benefit from quicker decision-making, enhanced responsiveness, and an improved approach to problem-solving. However, urgency must be balanced with a focus on quality to avoid the pitfall of rushing through tasks without sufficient thought or care.

Cultivating Urgency:

Encourage clear communication on deadlines and goals.

Reward proactive decision-making and fast responses.

Provide tools and resources that streamline workflows.

2. Foresight and Awareness: Anticipating the Future

Foresight is the ability to anticipate potential developments, challenges, and opportunities. Employees with strong foresight are able to look beyond the immediate tasks at hand and consider the long-term impact on company growth. This trait is crucial in a rapidly changing business environment, where being ahead of the curve can lead to significant competitive advantages.

Awareness, on the other hand, involves being attuned to the current dynamics within the organization and the wider industry. Employees who possess awareness can read the room, detect potential risks, and spot emerging opportunities before they become critical.

Cultivating Foresight and Awareness:

Conduct regular training and development to build industry knowledge.

Encourage a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability.

Promote collaboration and cross-training to share insights and ideas.

3. Ownership: Taking Responsibility for Success

Ownership is a key ingredient in fostering a sense of accountability. Employees who take ownership of their tasks and projects are more likely to go above and beyond to ensure success. They don’t just wait for instructions or pass off responsibility when things go wrong. Instead, they take pride in their work and are committed to seeing it through to completion, regardless of obstacles.

This approach helps in creating a culture where employees feel responsible not only for their own performance but also for contributing to the success of the organization. Ownership often leads to greater engagement, as employees feel a sense of pride and investment in their work.

Cultivating Ownership:

Set clear expectations and empower employees to make decisions.

Recognize and reward employees who demonstrate accountability.

Foster an environment where taking responsibility is valued over placing blame.

4. Initiative: Taking Action Without Being Told

Initiative is the drive to take action without waiting for directions or being prompted. Employees who show initiative are often self-starters who identify problems and propose solutions, or they take on tasks proactively to move the organization forward. Their ability to act independently can be a game-changer for business efficiency.

When initiative is widespread across an organization, it leads to continuous improvement, faster problem-solving, and a culture of innovation.

Cultivating Initiative:

Encourage a culture of experimentation and risk-taking.

Give employees the freedom to pursue ideas they believe will improve outcomes.

Support and mentor individuals who demonstrate leadership potential.

5. Follow-through: Commitment to Completion

Follow-through is the ability to stay committed to a task or project until it is completed successfully. It is a measure of persistence and dedication, ensuring that promises made are kept. Without follow-through, even the best ideas or intentions can fall short, leading to incomplete projects, missed opportunities, and lackluster results.

Employees who demonstrate strong follow-through help to build trust within teams and organizations. They’re known for delivering results consistently, which is a key factor in building a strong organizational reputation.

Cultivating Follow-through:

Set realistic expectations and deadlines to ensure tasks are completed on time.

Provide ongoing support and resources to help employees stay focused and motivated.

Hold employees accountable for delivering on their commitments.

6. Accuracy: Precision in Every Task

Accuracy is essential in any professional setting. Whether it’s data entry, customer service, or complex project management, accuracy ensures that tasks are performed correctly, reducing the need for revisions and minimizing errors that could have costly consequences.

Employees who focus on accuracy bring a high level of reliability to the workplace. Their attention to detail ensures that output is consistently high quality, and their work is often free of costly mistakes that could otherwise impact the organization’s success.

Cultivating Accuracy:

Provide training on attention to detail and best practices for error-free work.

Implement quality control processes to catch mistakes early.

Foster a work environment where precision is celebrated and valued.

Building a High-Performing Workforce

Each of these watchwords – urgency, foresight, ownership, initiative, follow-through, and accuracy – plays a vital role in creating a highly effective and efficient workforce. While individually crucial, these traits often reinforce one another; for example, foresight can guide initiative, while ownership strongly supports follow-through. When employees consistently exhibit these qualities, they contribute not only to their own success but also to the overall success of their teams and organizations.

Employers can cultivate these qualities by creating an environment that values and encourages these traits, providing training and feedback, and recognizing the efforts of employees who demonstrate these skills. Ultimately, a workforce that embodies urgency, foresight, ownership, initiative, follow-through, and accuracy is well-equipped to meet the demands of an ever-evolving marketplace and drive sustained success.

Find the latest April update at the conclusion of the article

The job market in Central Pennsylvania remains dynamic as we enter spring 2025. With low unemployment rates and a rebounding economy, the demand for talent in key sectors such as IT, finance, administrative support, and data processing continues to grow. At Abel Personnel, we are closely monitoring these trends and positioning ourselves as a trusted recruitment partner for businesses looking to navigate this competitive market.

Meanwhile, changes in the federal workforce are introducing new dynamics that both employers and job seekers need to navigate. Below, we explore the latest trends in workforce demand, how employers are responding, and the factors shaping the region’s hiring landscape.

Strong Demand Across Key Sectors

Central PA’s job market remains strong, with more job openings than before the pandemic and unemployment rates hovering at historically low levels. In this competitive labor market, the demand for skilled professionals continues to be high across multiple sectors:

Information Technology (IT)

The technology sector continues to be a focal point for job growth in Central PA. Despite national tech layoffs in 2024, local businesses are still grappling with a shortage of qualified IT professionals. High-demand roles in IT include software developers, cyber security specialists, data analysts, and cloud infrastructure experts.

With emerging fields like AI and machine learning growing, companies are eager for tech professionals who can drive digital initiatives. Low tech unemployment means candidates are highly selective, often opting for roles that offer strong career growth and flexibility.

Data Processing & Analytics

Data-driven roles are closely linked to IT but deserve special mention due to their growing importance in the region. Pennsylvania has seen substantial growth in data processing and hosting jobs, with businesses investing heavily in data centers and analytics teams. From 2018 to 2024, employment in data centers across the state grew by nearly 50%.

This trend is mirrored in Central PA, where there is an increasing demand for database administrators, data analysts, and IT support roles within data systems. Given Harrisburg’s role as a government and insurance hub, many data processing operations are based in the area. This trend is expected to continue, creating ample job opportunities for professionals in data management and analysis.

Finance & Accounting

Hiring in the finance and accounting sectors has picked up momentum in 2025, and employers are actively seeking professionals in roles ranging from accountants to financial analysts. Unemployment in these fields is low, particularly for accountants, with fewer young professionals entering the profession.

Banks, insurance companies, and corporate finance departments in Central PA are actively recruiting for positions such as payroll specialists and tax analysts. A recent survey showed that 65% of finance managers nationwide plan to hire for new roles, but 93% report difficulty finding skilled candidates. As a result, experienced financial professionals are in high demand, with employers offering competitive salaries and benefits to attract them.

Administration & Office Support

Administrative roles remain essential to the functioning of businesses, but the evolving landscape of technology is changing the nature of these positions. Organizations are seeking office managers, executive assistants, project coordinators, and data processing specialists who can leverage new software and manage organizational data.

While automation may reduce the number of traditional administrative positions, openings abound due to retirements and turnover – with an estimated 2 million+ administrative job openings per year nationwide. In Central PA, industries like legal services, logistics, healthcare, and education are all competing for experienced administrative staff.

Effects of Federal Workforce Changes on Job Seekers

A notable factor impacting Central PA’s job market this year is the transformation of the federal government workforce. As part of an initiative to improve efficiency and reduce costs, there has been a wave of layoffs across several federal agencies. Many federal employees, including those in IT, accounting, and administrative roles, have been affected by these cuts. This situation has had two primary effects:

Increased Availability of Passive Candidates: Many government workers, who once felt secure in their roles, are now exploring new job opportunities. These individuals, once passive candidates, have become active job seekers due to job uncertainty. Abel Personnel is actively helping businesses tap into this pool of talented professionals, many of whom bring valuable experience in IT, cyber security, finance, and project management.

Fresh Talent for Local Employers: The federal workforce changes have created an opportunity for private companies and state agencies to tap into a new talent pool. Former federal employees bring specialized skills, particularly in IT, cyber security, finance, and project management, that are highly transferable to other industries. Abel Personnel is working with these highly qualified professionals to connect them with businesses looking to fill critical roles.

Candidate Sentiment: Cautious but Open to Change

Despite (or because of) the recent turmoil, worker sentiment in early 2025 in Central PA is a mix of confidence and caution. While many professionals feel secure in their current roles, a significant number are still open to new opportunities. Abel Personnel is helping employers understand that even passive candidates are open to change in today’s job market.

As we work with both active and passive candidates, we see that many professionals are more willing to explore new opportunities if they offer better growth, work-life balance, or flexibility. This shift presents a unique opportunity for employers to engage with top talent, even those who were not actively seeking a change.

How Employers Are Adapting Their Hiring Strategies

Employers in Central PA are adjusting their hiring and recruitment strategies to meet the challenges of the current labor market. Abel Personnel is working closely with businesses to help them adapt to these changes and navigate the tight labor supply. Here are some of the most notable employer responses:

Speeding Up and Streamlining Hiring: In a competitive environment, employers are shortening their hiring processes to move quickly when they find a qualified candidate. Streamlining recruitment processes is essential to reducing time-to-hire and ensuring that top candidates aren’t lost to competing offers.

Flexible Requirements and Upskilling: To fill positions more efficiently, employers are relaxing job requirements in some cases, particularly in tech roles. Many companies are focusing on finding candidates with the right core skills and offering training or upskilling programs to bring them up to speed, helping to fill roles without compromising on quality.

Leveraging Contract and Temp Talent: To meet immediate needs, more employers are turning to contract workers, consultants, and temporary staff. This approach provides flexibility for businesses to manage staffing gaps while continuing to search for permanent hires.

Offering Competitive Perks and Flexibility: Employers in Central PA are sweetening job offers to attract talent. In addition to raising salaries, many companies are offering hybrid and remote work options, which are becoming standard expectations for many job seekers. Crafting competitive offers that align with the desires of today’s workforce helps businesses attract and retain top talent.

Regional Factors Shaping Central PA Hiring

Several regional factors are influencing hiring trends in Central PA:

Government and Capital Region Employment: As the state capital, Harrisburg is home to numerous government jobs. Currently, many state agencies are hiring aggressively, which is creating both new job opportunities and increased competition for talent. Abel Personnel is actively helping businesses navigate this competitive landscape to attract the best candidates.

Talent Supply and Brain Drain: While Central PA has access to a strong talent pipeline through local colleges and universities, attracting and retaining young professionals can be a challenge.

Industry Mix in Central PA: The region’s diverse economy plays a significant role in shaping hiring trends. Central PA is a major hub for industries like healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, education, and finance/insurance. Regional growth in these sectors is driving demand for specialized talent, particularly in areas like data processing, IT support, and finance. Abel Personnel is uniquely positioned to connect businesses with top talent in these key sectors.

Closing Thoughts

As of March 2025, Central Pennsylvania’s job market is strong but evolving. Employers are hiring actively across IT, finance, administration, and data processing fields, but they face challenges in attracting and retaining the right people. For job seekers, especially those previously in passive roles, there are more opportunities available than ever.

The shake-up in the federal workforce has opened doors for new talent to enter the market, creating opportunities for both employers and job seekers alike. At Abel Personnel, we are here to help businesses connect with the talent they need to thrive in this rapidly changing market. Whether you are an employer seeking to fill critical roles or a job seeker exploring new opportunities, Abel Personnel is the trusted partner to help navigate the shifting job landscape in Central PA.

April 7th, 2025 Update:

As we progress through 2025, recent national developments are beginning to affect the job market, and businesses in Central PA should be aware of these changes. A recent New York Times article titled “The Job Market Has Been Resilient. The Trade War Could Be Its Undoing” (April 3, 2025) discusses the economic impact of newly announced tariffs.

The article highlights the following:
“The sweeping tariffs that Mr. Trump announced on Wednesday, and the duties that U.S. trading partners quickly imposed in retaliation, sent stock indexes around the world tumbling on Thursday. The effects won’t be limited to the financial markets: Economists say tariffs will raise prices for consumers and businesses, which will lead employers to pull back on hiring and, if the tariffs remain in place long enough, lay off workers.”

Layoffs have started to increase in recent months, particularly among small businesses, which are more vulnerable to rising costs. While many companies have responded to uncertainty by pausing hiring rather than cutting jobs, the lingering effects of post-pandemic labor shortages are still influencing employer decisions. As Amy Glaser, senior vice president at staffing firm Adecco, notes:
“There’s still a little bit of scarring from that labor market that leaves employers really wanting to hold on to their workers.”

However, this may change if tariffs continue to increase costs or negatively impact sales. Noah Yosif, chief economist for the American Staffing Association, predicts that if tariffs persist, layoffs may become inevitable.

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remained steady at 3.8% in March, staying below the national rate, which rose slightly to 4.1%. This indicates that while Central PA’s job market remains relatively strong, businesses must be prepared for potential slowdowns in hiring if the national economic landscape shifts further.

At Abel Personnel, we are closely monitoring these national trends and how they might impact hiring in Central PA. As we highlighted in our Spring 2025 report, staying informed and adaptable will be essential for employers navigating this period of economic uncertainty.

Imagine calling customer service with a frustrating problem, only to be met with a robotic, script-reading representative. Now imagine the same scenario, but the representative genuinely listens, understands your frustration, and offers a helpful solution. Which experience would you prefer? Most people would choose the second scenario. And it is not just a feeling, but numbers prove this. Studies show that 86% of buyers are willing to pay more for a great customer experience.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It’s different from sympathy, which is feeling sorry for someone. Empathy is feeling with someone. In today’s competitive market, empathy is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ in customer service; it’s a crucial skill that drives customer satisfaction, loyalty, and ultimately, business success. This article will explore why empathy matters and provide practical strategies for cultivating and demonstrating empathy in every customer interaction.

Why Empathy Matters in Customer Service (The “Why”)

Empathy isn’t just a feel-good buzzword; it’s a powerful tool that can transform customer interactions and drive significant business results. Here’s why:

A. Builds Trust and Rapport:

Empathy creates a sense of connection and understanding between the customer service representative and the customer. When a customer feels heard and valued, they’re more likely to believe that you have their best interests at heart. This, in turn, fosters trust, which is the foundation of any strong customer relationship. For example, if a customer is upset about a faulty product, an empathetic response acknowledges their frustration and assures them that you’ll work to find a solution.

B. Improves Customer Satisfaction:

Empathetic interactions lead to more positive customer experiences. When customers feel understood and supported, they’re more likely to feel satisfied with the resolution, even if the outcome isn’t exactly what they initially wanted. This positive experience translates into higher customer satisfaction scores, positive reviews, and valuable word-of-mouth referrals.

C. Increases Customer Loyalty:

Customers are more likely to return to businesses that demonstrate empathy. Empathy fosters long-term relationships, not just one-time transactions. It’s significantly more cost-effective to retain existing customers than to acquire new ones, making empathy a key driver of long-term profitability

D. De-escalates Conflict:

Empathy can defuse tense situations and prevent escalation. Acknowledging a customer’s frustration, even if you can’t immediately solve their problem, can calm them down and create a more productive conversation. Instead of arguing with an angry customer, an empathetic response like, “I understand why you’re frustrated, and I’m going to do my best to help,” can change the entire tone of the interaction.

E. Improves Problem-Solving:

Understanding the customer’s emotional state helps you understand the root of the problem, not just the surface issue. By recognizing the underlying emotions, you can tailor your solutions to address the customer’s needs more effectively and personally. This leads to quicker resolutions and happier customers.

F. Boosts Employee Morale (and Reduces Turnover):

Empathetic interactions are more rewarding for customer service representatives. When employees feel they are making a positive difference, it creates a more positive work environment. This, in turn, reduces burnout, stress, and employee turnover. A happier, more engaged team leads to better customer service overall.

How to Develop and Demonstrate Empathy (The “How”)

Empathy is a skill that can be developed and honed with practice. Here are some practical techniques:

A. Active Listening:

Truly listen to what the customer is saying (and not saying).

Pay attention to their tone of voice and body language (if in person or on video).

Avoid interrupting.

Ask clarifying questions: “Can you tell me more about that?” or “Just to make sure I understand…”

Reflect back what you hear: “So, it sounds like you’re feeling frustrated because…”

B. Put Yourself in Their Shoes:

Imagine the situation from the customer’s perspective.

Consider their needs, frustrations, and expectations.

Use your own experiences (if appropriate and genuine) to connect but avoid making conversation about you.

C. Use Empathetic Language:

Validate their feelings: “I understand why you’re upset.” “That sounds incredibly frustrating.” “I can see how that would be disappointing.”

Express genuine concern: “I’m so sorry you’re going through this.” “I want to help you resolve this as quickly as possible.”

Avoid dismissive phrases: “Calm down.” “That’s not our policy.” “There’s nothing I can do.”

Use “I” statements: “I understand…” “I can help with that…”

D. Show, Don’t Just Tell:

Go the extra mile to help the customer.

Offer personalized solutions.

Follow up to ensure the issue is resolved.

Be proactive in anticipating their needs.

E. Practice Self-Awareness:

Be aware of your own emotions and biases.

Recognize your triggers and how they might affect your interactions

Take breaks when needed to avoid burnout, which can hinder your ability to empathize.

F. Seek Feedback:

Ask for regular feedback from supervisors, peers, and even customers (when appropriate) to determine where your strengths and weaknesses related to empathy lie.

Use the feedback received to create an ongoing plan of improvement.

Examples of Empathetic vs. Non-Empathetic Responses

Here are a few scenarios to illustrate the difference between empathetic and non-empathetic responses:

First Scenario: Customer calls about a delayed delivery

Non-Empathetic: “The package is in transit. There’s nothing I can do.”

Empathetic: “I understand how frustrating it is to wait for a package that’s delayed. Let me check on the status and see if I can get you a more precise delivery estimate.”

Second Scenario: Customer is upset about a billing error

Non-Empathetic: “That’s the amount you owe. You have to pay it.”

Empathetic: “I can see how a billing error would be upsetting. Let me look into this for you and see how we can correct it.”

Third Scenario: Customer is confused about how to use a product

Non-Empathetic: “It’s all in the manual. Read the instructions.”

Empathetic: “I understand that the instructions can be a little confusing. Let’s walk through it together step-by-step.”

Building Empathy for Customer Interactions

Empathy is no longer a luxury in customer service; it’s a necessity. By understanding and responding to the emotions of your customers, you can build trust, improve satisfaction, increase loyalty, and create a more positive experience for everyone involved. The techniques outlined in this article – active listening, perspective-taking, empathetic language, and showing genuine care – are essential tools for any customer service professional.
