If you are looking for a job that provides stability, flexibility, and valuable workplace skills, our customer service roles offer an excellent opportunity. Whether you are entering the workforce for the first time or transitioning from another industry, working in a customer service role can provide immediate benefits while helping you build skills that will serve you throughout your career.

A call center supervisor gave us an insight into his transition into leadership. We asked him how his experience in the call center helped prepare him for success in his current leadership role. He responded, “Learning how to use our system and working in a fast-paced customer service job have really helped me learn to multi-task. Also, opportunities that opened for me to be a department trainer while under Abel really helped me to hone my leadership skills and learn to teach people more effectively and efficiently. I am very thankful for my time in the customer service call center and the ability this company does have to move up if you put forth the effort.”

A Reliable and Stable Work Environment

One of the key benefits of working in our customer service positions is job stability. Employees enjoy consistent schedules, predictable work hours, and a structured environment that allows them to plan their lives with confidence. Unlike retail or fast-food jobs, where shift changes can be unpredictable, our roles provide a level of dependability that helps employees maintain a steady routine. Additionally, our call center has weekends off and most major holidays off, giving employees valuable time to spend with family and friends.

Competitive Pay and Work-from-Home Opportunities

We recognize the importance of work-life balance and offer remote work opportunities to eligible employees. This flexibility allows employees to save on commuting costs, create a comfortable work environment, and manage their schedules more efficiently. Our positions also offer competitive pay, providing financial security and stability

Skill Development That Transfers to Any Career

A customer service job is more than just answering calls—it is an opportunity to develop skills that are valuable in any profession. Employees gain experience in:

Communication: Learning to interact professionally with customers and colleagues.

Problem-Solving: Finding solutions to customer inquiries and challenges

Time Management: Handling multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Resilience: Learning to stay patient and professional in challenging situations.

These skills help employees grow, whether they stay in customer service or pursue other career paths in the future.

A Supportive Work Environment

We prioritize employee well-being and encourage a positive, team-oriented culture. Our Abel Personnel team values open communication. We are committed to providing employees with the tools and resources they need to succeed in their roles. Employees who perform well and show reliability may have opportunities to take on added responsibilities within their teams. While we do not have a formal career path or structured advancement programs, many employees have advanced to supervisory and management roles.

An Excellent Starting Point for Future Opportunities

For those new to the workforce or looking to gain professional experience, our customer service roles serve as a solid foundation. Many of our employees use the skills they develop here to transition into new opportunities inside and outside of the company. One of our supervisors who started in the call center reflects on her journey: “The experiences that had the biggest impact on my success were, first and foremost, always keeping the customers’ needs as my #1 priority.

The second experience I would like to highlight is remaining teachable and willing to learn new things. Here at the company, it is very beneficial to still be malleable and flexible to learn new things. A lesson I can speak of is just being honest with yourself and not taking on too much if you are unsure if you can handle it. Practice makes perfect and asking questions if you’re unsure of something is vital to growth.”

Because she stayed flexible, worked hard, and remained teachable, she was promoted to a department trainer after just 7 months. Then, after 6 more months of staying focused and continuing her hard work, she was promoted to lead customer service representative. Eventually, her dedication paid off, and she was promoted to Customer Service Supervisor shortly after.

Customer service skills are valuable assets that boost a candidate’s appeal across various industries.

For many college graduates, the moment of crossing the stage and receiving their diploma marks the end of one journey—but also the beginning of another: the search for a job. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic changes, and shifting global trends, the labor market has transformed in ways that few could have predicted. Today’s graduates are stepping into a job market that’s very different from what their parents or even older siblings experienced.

In fact, according to a report by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, nearly 40% of recent graduates are underemployed, meaning they’re working in positions that don’t require a degree. This new reality can feel overwhelming, but it also comes with exciting opportunities for those willing to adapt.

So, what exactly are college graduates facing today? Let’s take a closer look at the challenges and opportunities in the new labor market.

The Skills Gap: What Employers Want vs. What Graduates Have

One of the most glaring challenges for new grads is the widening skills gap. In today’s rapidly evolving world, employers are looking for specific competencies that go beyond what’s taught in a traditional classroom setting.

While a college degree provides foundational knowledge, employers often seek soft skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication—skills that aren’t always fully emphasized in academic curricula. Additionally, the demand for specialized technical skills, such as proficiency in data analytics, coding, and cybersecurity, is higher than ever.

Graduates often find themselves caught in the middle: they have the educational background, but lack the hands-on experience or technical skills that many employers want. This is particularly challenging for those entering industries like tech, marketing, or finance, where the landscape shifts quickly.

What graduates can do:

Take online courses or certifications in high-demand skills like project management, coding, or digital marketing.

Seek out internships, side projects, or freelance work to gain real-world experience.

Develop a personal portfolio that showcases skills and projects to potential employers.

The Gig Economy and Freelancing Boom

Gone are the days when a 9-to-5 job was the only option for recent graduates. Today, the gig economy is booming, with more and more graduates opting for flexible, freelance, or remote work opportunities.

Freelancing has its perks: greater autonomy, the ability to work on diverse projects, and access to a global job market. According to a 2024 survey by Upwork, nearly 40% of the U.S. workforce is engaged in some form of freelance work, and recent grads are joining this trend in increasing numbers.

However, freelancing isn’t without its challenges. The lack of job security, fluctuating income, and the absence of employee benefits (like health insurance or retirement plans) can make it a tough choice, especially for those fresh out of school and carrying student loan debt.

What graduates can do:

Start building a freelance portfolio while still in school to attract clients early on.

Learn how to manage their finances and plan for periods of income instability.

Network within their industry to build connections that can lead to future opportunities.

The Competitive Job Market

One of the harsh realities of entering the workforce today is fierce competition. It’s no longer just other recent grads vying for the same roles; experienced professionals are also shifting careers and applying for entry-level positions, especially in high-growth industries like technology and healthcare.

The scarcity of jobs in certain fields, combined with the abundance of candidates, has made securing a job more difficult than ever. Many graduates feel the weight of mounting student loan debt and the pressure to secure a position that aligns with their career dreams.

What graduates can do:

Build a strong personal brand on platforms like LinkedIn and attend industry networking events.

Customize their resumes and cover letters for each job application to stand out from the crowd.

Consider starting in a related field to gain experience before transitioning to their ideal role.

The Rise of Remote and Hybrid Work

The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed how people work, and many companies have embraced remote or hybrid work models as a permanent solution. For new graduates, this shift has been both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, the rise of remote work opens doors to jobs that were once geographically out of reach, allowing graduates to work for companies in different cities or even countries. On the other hand, remote work can sometimes feel isolating, and without a traditional office environment, it may be harder to network or build relationships with colleagues.

What graduates can do:

Develop strong communication skills, as remote work often requires clear and concise messaging.

Learn how to manage their time and set boundaries between work and personal life to avoid burnout.

Take the initiative to reach out to coworkers and participate in virtual networking events to stay connected.

Mental Health and Work-Life Balance

As the pressure to succeed in a competitive job market intensifies, mental health has become a significant concern for many college graduates. The weight of student loans, navigating a difficult job market, and balancing personal and professional lives can lead to burnout and anxiety.

It’s essential for graduates to prioritize their mental well-being, even in the face of external pressures. Creating a sustainable work-life balance early in their careers can set the tone for long-term success and satisfaction.

What graduates can do:

Practice self-care by setting realistic expectations and carving out time for rest and relaxation.

Seek out mental health resources or therapy to manage stress and anxiety.

Build a support system of mentors, friends, and family to stay grounded during challenging times.

The Importance of Lifelong Learning and Adaptability

The rapid pace of technological change means that today’s college graduates will need to remain lifelong learners to stay competitive. The skills that are in demand now may not be the same in five or ten years, so graduates must be adaptable and willing to learn new skills as industries evolve.

Whether through online courses, certifications, or informal learning, investing in continued education is a great way to stay ahead.

What graduates can do:

Regularly assess the skills that are trending in their field and seek out relevant courses or training.

Be open to pivoting to new roles or industries if opportunities arise.

Embrace a growth mindset that encourages continuous improvement.

The job market today presents both challenges and opportunities for college graduates. From navigating the skills gap to competing in a crowded field, the road to securing a fulfilling job may not be easy. But with the right mix of skills, adaptability, and a focus on mental well-being, graduates can not only overcome these challenges but also seize exciting opportunities in a rapidly changing world.

Graduates: While the journey ahead may seem uncertain, remember that your ability to learn, adapt, and connect will be your greatest asset as you embark on this new chapter of your career.

Have you ever wondered what FMLA in Pennsylvania is and whether it applies to you? If the answer is “yes,” then you’ve come to the right place.

While most people understand that FMLA deals with taking off work for medical reasons, there may be confusion regarding eligibility, applicable situations, and how much leave is available. Other areas of concern to employers and employees include whether FMLA leave is paid, the amount of notice employers require, what constitutes an FMLA violation and steps employees can take to safeguard their FMLA rights.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) which is now in effect, requires employers to provide accommodations to pregnant workers for everything from pregnancy through the postpartum period, including time off to recover.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) both provide protections and support for workers in different circumstances related to pregnancy, family, and medical needs, but they are distinct pieces of legislation with different goals and provisions. This article addresses all issues to help you know rights under the laws.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA)

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is a law designed to protect pregnant workers from discrimination in the workplace. It requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers, ensuring they can continue working without facing undue hardship due to their pregnancy. Some of its key features include:

1. Reasonable Accommodations: The PWFA mandates that employers provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant workers. This can include things like:

Providing additional breaks.

Modifying work duties (e.g., limiting heavy lifting).

Allowing a worker to sit or stand as needed.

2. Protection Against Discrimination: Employers cannot discriminate against an employee because of pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition. For example, they can’t hire someone simply because they are pregnant or fire them for needing any accommodation.

3. Applies to All Employers: Unlike some other laws, the PWFA can apply to businesses with fewer employees, ensuring broad protection for pregnant workers.

4. No Need for Unpaid Leave: Unlike FMLA, the PWFA is focused on making it possible for workers to remain in the workforce while they are pregnant or recovering from childbirth, without the need for unpaid leave.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

The Family and Medical Leave Act is a federal law that provides job protection and unpaid leave for workers facing personal or family medical situations. FMLA protects workers’ ability to take time off for a variety of reasons, including pregnancy and childbirth. Some of its key features include:

1. Unpaid Leave: FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to eligible workers, which can be used for pregnancy, childbirth, adoption, and other family or medical situations.2. Job Protection Workers on FMLA leave are entitled to return to their job or an equivalent job after their leave ends. This ensures they won’t lose their position while taking time off for family or medical reasons.

3. Eligibility: To qualify for FMLA leave, a worker must have worked for the employer for at least 12 months and at least 1,250 hours during that time, and the employer must have at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius.

4. Broad Family Coverage: While FMLA is often used for pregnancy and childbirth, it also covers the need to care for a family member with a serious health condition or for an employee’s own serious health condition.

5. Does Not Mandate Paid Leave: FMLA guarantees job protection, but it does not require employers to pay employees during the leave, though workers may choose to use accrued paid leave, such as sick or vacation days.

Key Differences Between the PWFA and FMLA

1. Focus and Scope:

The PWFA is specifically about reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers to ensure they can continue working.

The FMLA, on the other hand, is about job protection during extended medical or family leave, whether for pregnancy or other medical situations.

2. Time Off vs. Accommodations:

The PWFA focuses on several accommodations to help workers stay on the job (e.g., modifying their work duties).

The FMLA offers time off, allowing workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

3. Paid Leave:

The PWFA does not involve paid leave; it is about workplace adjustments.

The FMLA provides job protection for unpaid leave, but paid leave is not guaranteed unless the employer offers it, or the worker has accrued paid leave.

4. Eligibility:

The PWFA applies to all employers and workers, regardless of the size of the company.

The FMLA applies only to employers with 50 or more employees and workers who meet certain work hour and time requirements.

How These Laws Work Together

In practice, workers may be eligible for both the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act simultaneously. For instance, a pregnant worker may request reasonable accommodations under the PWFA to ensure they can continue working without harm, and if they need time off for childbirth or complications, they may also qualify for FMLA leave.

It’s important to note that while the PWFA focuses on accommodations during pregnancy, FMLA allows for time off when necessary. Workers can benefit from both laws, but the key difference is that PWFA ensures reasonable adjustments in the workplace, while FMLA guarantees job protection during leave.

Conclusion: Understanding Your Rights

Both the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act are crucial pieces of legislation designed to protect workers, particularly those dealing with pregnancy and family-related medical issues. While the PWFA ensures pregnant workers have the accommodations they need to stay in the workforce, the FMLA gives them the security of job protection when they need to take medical leave. Understanding both laws helps employees navigate their rights and responsibilities in the workplace, ensuring that they don’t have to choose between their health and their job.

You’ve got the skills, the experience, and the drive. But in a sea of qualified candidates, how do you ensure you’re the one who gets noticed? The answer lies in a carefully crafted professional brand. Your personal brand is the unique image and perception others have of you as a professional. It’s the story you tell, the skills you emphasize, and the values you convey. Effective professional branding can be the difference between stagnation and career success.

What is Professional Branding?

Professional branding is the way you present yourself in the workplace and beyond. It is how you communicate your values, skills, and expertise to the world. Think of it as your reputation, but with a more intentional and strategic approach. Your brand is built over time, through both online and offline interactions, and it reflects who you are professionally.

A strong personal brand highlights your strengths, showcases your unique abilities, and distinguishes you from others in your industry. It conveys your values and what sets you apart from your peers. When done effectively, your personal brand can open doors to new opportunities, promotions, and professional networks.

Why is Professional Branding Important?

Differentiation in a Competitive Market: With so many talented professionals vying for the same opportunities, having a well-defined brand helps you stand out. When your brand is clear and authentic, it becomes easier for hiring managers, colleagues, and clients to remember you and recognize your value.

Attracting Opportunities: When your personal brand is aligned with your career goals, it creates opportunities. A strong brand increases your visibility, leading to more job offers, speaking engagements, collaborations, and projects that are in line with your aspirations.

Building Trust and Credibility: Consistency is key in branding. When you present a reliable and trustworthy image, whether through your work or online presence, people are more likely to trust you. Trust plays a significant role in professional growth and the development of long-term relationships.

Career Advancement: As your personal brand gains recognition, it can serve as a tool for career progression. A well-established brand can set you on the path to leadership roles, provide a platform for public speaking, or even open doors for entrepreneurial ventures.

Networking and Influence: A strong personal brand attracts like-minded professionals and industry leaders, helping you build a robust network. This network can be a valuable resource for mentorship, advice, or career opportunities.

Steps to Build Your Professional Brand

1. Identify Your Strengths and Values

Before you can build your personal brand, it’s essential to understand what makes you unique. Reflect on your core skills, qualities, and professional values. What do you do best? What are you passionate about? And What are your goals for the future? Understanding these elements will help you define your brand with clarity and purpose.

2. Craft Your Personal Brand Statement

Your personal brand statement is a concise, clear description of who you are and what you stand for. It’s a message that communicates your strengths, your unique skills, and your career focus. It should be short, memorable, and aligned with your professional identity.

Example: “I am a data-driven marketing strategist with a passion for helping businesses leverage insights to drive growth and customer engagement. I specialize in content strategy, SEO, and digital marketing analytics.”

3. Create a Consistent Online Presence

In today’s digital age, your online presence is crucial to your personal brand. Update your LinkedIn profile, professional website, and any other platforms where you engage with potential employers or clients. Make sure your profile pictures, bios, and descriptions align with the personal brand you want to project. Regularly share content that reflects your expertise and industry knowledge to position yourself as a thought leader.

4. Network Strategically

Networking is not just about quantity but quality. Seek out professional communities, both online and offline, where you can connect with people who align with your career goals. Attend industry events, engage with professionals on LinkedIn, and look for opportunities to collaborate with others in your field. Your network is a powerful asset that can help grow your brand.

5. Consistency and Authenticity Matter

The key to effective professional branding is consistency. Whether it’s how you present yourself in person, how you communicate in emails, or what you post on social media, your personal brand should be coherent across all platforms. But consistency should never come at the expense of authenticity. Stay true to your values and communicate in a way that aligns with who you are.

6. Seek Feedback and Evolve

Your personal brand should evolve with you. Continuously seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, and friends about how they perceive your professional identity. Use this feedback to refine and enhance your brand. Remember, as your career progresses, your brand may need to shift to reflect your growing expertise or new career focus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Professional Branding

Over-promising and Under-delivering: While it’s essential to highlight your strengths, make sure that your claims match your capabilities. Over-inflating your skills or experience can damage your credibility if you fail to deliver.

Being Inconsistent: Presenting a different version of yourself in each environment (work, online, in-person) can confuse others and undermine your personal brand. Consistency builds trust and makes your brand more memorable.

Neglecting Your Online Presence: Your personal brand is not just about your in-person interactions. In today’s digital age, an unkempt or outdated LinkedIn profile or social media presence can hurt your professional image.

Ignoring the Importance of Networking: Even if you’re doing great work, it’s not enough to sit back and wait for opportunities to come to you. Networking helps amplify your personal brand and put you in touch with people who can help move your career forward.

Conclusion: Empowering Your Career through Professional Branding

Professional branding is a powerful tool that can drive career success. It’s more than just marketing yourself—it’s about aligning your values, skills, and goals with how you present yourself to the world. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your career to the next level, investing time in building and refining your personal brand will pay off in the long run.
