Job Overview:
Abel Personnel is partnering with a leading client to hire a COMPASS COBOL Developer. We are seeking a highly skilled developer with expertise in COBOL/DB2/CICS who will play a key role in the development, enhancement, and maintenance of business-critical applications. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the migration of legacy systems to a cloud-based environment while leveraging your experience with COBOL.

Note: Candidates must be able to obtain a federal security clearance as part of the employment process. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain application solutions in a COBOL/DB2/CICS environment, following specifications from Requirements Analysts and Application Integration Architects.
  • Contribute to the migration of legacy systems to cloud-based platforms, utilizing existing COBOL code.
  • Design, implement, and execute unit and functional tests to ensure high code quality and performance.
  • Conduct comprehensive testing of software changes, ensuring accuracy across various platforms and tools.
  • Adhere to established processes to deliver top-tier technical solutions.
  • Participate in and lead code reviews to uphold best practices and coding standards.
  • Collaborate in technical reviews to detect defects in design, code, and test cases.
  • Document all changes to code and applications following company standards.
  • Assist senior developers by managing detailed tasks, tracking effort, and providing estimates on project timelines.
  • Support the development of proof-of-concept and prototype environments.
  • Maintain and manage version control for code repositories.
  • Identify potential risks and actively participate in mitigation and control measures.
  • Provide 24/7 on-call support on a rotating basis to ensure system uptime and performance in production environments.
  • Handle production support activities such as incident management, issue resolution, code corrections, upgrades, and patches.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience with COBOL, DB2, and CICS development.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments and migration processes is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of unit testing, functional testing, and code review methodologies.
  • Experience with version control systems and repository management.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Willingness to provide 24/7 on-call support on a rotational basis.
